Ben Macdui and Cairngorm
Ben Macdui and Cairngorm are the second and sixth highest mountains in the Scottish Highlands. A walk traversing the beautiful wild plateau between them is both challenging and rewarding.
This is a winter walk and you will need an ice axe and crampons. It is important that you are ready for winter and I would recommend that you have attended a winter skills course before booking. #ThinkWinter!
We will start at the Cairngorm Mountain ski area and head out beneath the northern corries of the Cairngorms. It’s a lovely walk with views over Strathspey as we traverse the hillside climbing steadily towards the plateau. Our route takes us onto the stunning Cairngorm Plateau before heading for Ben Macdui. The walk across the plateau is wonderful with a final steep pull to the summit and its panoramic views.
We will explore the plateau along the way back to the rim of Coire an t-Sneachda with an optional detour to one of the best views in the Cairngorms. Once back at the northern corries a good walk along the cliffs brings us to the the summit of Cairngorm. From here it’s a straightforward descent down windy ridge with the option of a hot chocolate in the highest cafe in the UK on the way!
