Sgor Gaibhre and Carn Dearg

Sgor Gaibhre and Carn Dearg are two wild Munros on the edge of Rannoch Moor. Their central location in the highlands means they have extensive views in all directions. You can climb these hills in a good circuit above Loch Ossian using the train to access Corrour, but this walk will use the southern approach from Rannoch. This is the quieter side to these hills and gives a rewarding journey.

We will follow the old Road to the Isles to approach the Carn Dearg and Sgor Gaibhre on a good track to warm up. At a hydro track we break off the route and then pick our way up onto the south ridge of Carn Dearg. Once up high the undulating ridge gives fine walking and great views. An easy descent into the Mam Ban leads us to a steady walk up to Sgor Gaibhre and its lovely summit. Our route heads south from here down to the Bealach Leathain where we will head into Coire Eigheach. It’s fairly rough going for a short stretch until we pick up a path that takes us back out to the hydro track and back to the cars.

There is the option at the Bealach Leathain depending on weather and time to climb an optional extra! Meall na Meoig is a Corbett south of the bealach and adds about 200m climbing and an hours walking onto the day. Surprisingly there is no real difference in the distance, but it is pathless and slightly rougher descent to the track.
